NCS Technical Skills Challenge 2026 – Nepal’s First Competition of Its Kind

Nepal Cycling School (NCS) held its first NCS Technical Skills Challenge on 3 October, bringing 28 riders together to test their balance, bike control, precision, agility and confidence on a purpose-built technical course. Inspired by the UCI Trials discipline, the event was the first competition of its kind in Nepal.

Participants tackled nine obstacles of varying difficulty, completing two laps of the course. Results were determined by obstacle points and time. The field included riders across kids, junior, youth, women, elite and master categories, with participants ranging from a five-year-old youngest rider to two para-athletes—one riding without a leg and another without a hand.

A challenge prepared in ten days

Preparations were interrupted by catastrophic flooding in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. NCS organizers paused race planning to support relief efforts, then faced a decision about whether to postpone the event. With tourism season approaching and Nepal’s major festival period near, postponement risked preventing the challenge from taking place.

The team chose to keep the announced date and organized the event in just ten days. NCS members and students designed and built the obstacles in the school’s indoor space, using purchased materials such as wood planks, nails and iron rods. New Zealand Level 2 Mountain Bike Coach Isabella Lemond later helped develop the scoring system and judged the competition.

The course rewarded riders for completing obstacles while minimizing mistakes. The final results combined obstacle points with a time score, producing an overall score for each participant.

Results and Participation

The results table records 28 finishers. Junior rider Ronicks Hang topped the overall standings with a final score of 98.83, followed by junior rider Dorje Tamang with 96.20 and junior rider Shorjan Mahresha with 96.19. The top-scoring woman was Jamuna Rai, whose final score was 87.62.

The accompanying participant profile shows a broad range of experience: 56.8% of participants were at intermediate level, 31.8% were beginners and 11.4% were advanced riders. The age-category chart shows kids under 15 as the largest group, at 31.1%, followed by elite riders at 24.4%, masters at 15.6%, juniors at 13.3% and youths at 8.9%. Women of all ages made up the remaining share shown in the chart.
